The European Parliament voted on a report on protecting the freedom of scientific research in its plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday. We stand up for the freedom of scientific research, which is a constitutional value enshrined in Hungary’s Fundamental Law. However, this report is yet another attempt to discredit Hungary, commissioned by the Soros network, which our group firmly rejects.
Fidesz MEP András Gyürk said that the Soros network, in cooperation with the left-wing majority in the European Parliament, wants to turn the principle of the freedom of scientific research, which follows the rule of law, into a political weapon. “The report only mentions Hungary and presents the alleged closure and expulsion of the Soros University as a factor undermining academic freedom. However, we know that CEU is still operating in Budapest and that the laws must be respected by everyone”, the politician stressed. MEP András Gyürk emphasized that Hungary stands for the freedom of scientific research, which is a constitutional value enshrined in the Fundamental Law. “This report is not about that, but is another attempt to discredit Hungary commissioned by the Soros network. We have, therefore, firmly rejected it”, he said.
Fidesz MEP Andrea Bocskor added that “it is disappointing to see the European Parliament producing reports condemning Hungary on various flimsy grounds. Meanwhile, the European Commission and the Parliament itself are committing the greatest violation of rights by depriving students, teachers and researchers at Hungarian universities that have adopted the new model of the right to participate in the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes, simply in order to blackmail and exert political pressure on the Hungarian government”.
