The plenary session of the European Parliament made a proposal regarding the number of seats in the European Parliament of each Member State for the next parliamentary term. In order to put pressure on the Council, the left-wing majority of the European Parliament forced its proposal on the establishment of transnational lists into the draft.
Based on the Treaties, the European Parliament is obliged to propose the next European Parliament mandates for the representative seats during each parliamentary term. However, the pro-federal majority of the European Parliament, diverting the procedure from the legal purpose of the Treaties, wants to blackmail the Council with the number of mandates from individual Member States to introduce transnational lists.
The purpose of the proposal concerning the distribution of mandates is to put pressure on the Member States since the Council has not included the European Parliament’s proposal to introduce transnational lists in its agenda for more than a year.
Fidesz MEP László Trócsányi has explained that the majority does not support the transnational list; moreover, supporters of a federal Europe are once again misrepresenting their role by blackmailing with EP-seats. “European party lists would not make the functioning of the European Parliament more democratic, they would not bring it closer to the citizens; on the contrary, with centrally compiled lists national parties lose their influence on European affairs,” said the MEP.
Fidesz representatives did not support the proposal in its current form, given the large number of references to the transnational list.
