Over the past few days, the social media platforms of the European Parliament and several Member State’s EP liaison officies have published content that grossly attacks Hungary and misrepresents our country. “On behalf of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, we reject in the strongest possible terms this concerted smear campaign, which is unprecedented in the European Parliament’s communication practice”, wrote Kinga Gál, President of the Fidesz EP delegation, and Tamás Deutsch, Head of the Fidesz EP delegation, in their letter to Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament. MEP Enikő Győri reminded: in the current crisis-affected situation, instead of dividing Europe, we need to unite. In their letter, Fidesz MEPs call on President Metsola to put an end to the fake news campaign and to hold those responsible to account.
Over the past few days, the content that has appeared in at least 12 languages on the social media platforms of the European Parliament grossly attacks Hungary and misrepresents our country. The content published on the social media platforms of the European Parliament in English, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Finnish, German, Greek, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian and Spanish lists and details the most biased findings of the Delbos-Corfield report on Hungary, adopted during the plenary session in September, to give the impression as if left-wing political aspersions were objective facts. “On behalf of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, we reject in the strongest possible terms this concerted smear campaign, which is unprecedented in the European Parliament’s communication practice”, wrote MEPs Kinga Gál and Tamás Deutsch in their letter to Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament.
“The fact that the left-wing majority in the European Parliament has been waging a political vendetta against the Hungarian Government for a decade is itself a sign of undermining European cooperation, but it is entirely unacceptable for the European Parliament’s administration to engage in a massive disinformation campaign against one of the Member States”, highlighted the MEPs.
“The fact that the above content was published some two weeks after the debate and adoption of the Delbos-Corfield report seems to confirm that the European Parliament’s aim with this campaign is not in fact to inform, but to discredit and exert pressure. This while constructive negotiations are underway between the European Commission and the Hungarian Government to bring the conditionality procedure to a speedy conclusion, and the Hungarian Government is honouring its commitments”, emphasised the MEPs.
“Given that the integrity of the European Parliament is at stake, we expect the President to put an immediate stop to this unacceptable campaign, open an investigation and hold those responsible to account”, the leaders of the delegation closed their letter.
