The European Parliament (EP) today adopted in its plenary session a report assessing the European Central Bank’s (ECB) Annual Report 2022. In her speech, Fidesz MEP Enikő Győri emphasized: “The EU sanctions against Russia further increased energy and food prices. This led to double-digit inflation in the EU last year. This is a tax on the poor. So it is crucial that the ECB works with all its might to restore price stability.”
The MEP welcomed the ECB’s measures to promote financial resilience and price stability: “This is also important for countries outside the eurozone, as they cannot disconnect themselves from what is happening in the eurozone.”
Following the vote, MEP Enikő Győri pointed out that unfortunately the left is again not on the side of the citizens: “In the midst of the fight against inflation, they wanted to give an ideological charge to the central bank’s activities and even prevent the fight against price increases by ending monetary tightening”.
The MEP acknowledged the ECB’s efforts towards greening, in which the Hungarian National Bank is also at the forefront. However, she stressed that the institution should not be turned into a green or investment bank.
