Ukrainian authorities have created a civil-war situation in Transcarpathia

2020. 12. 02.

The Fidesz-KDNP Delegation to the European Parliament finds it disgraceful and deeply condemns the use of armed force by Ukrainian authorities against the leaders and organizations of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia. Monday’s serious events are part of an unacceptable process in which the Ukrainian Government has been trampling on national minority rights for years. The Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association (KMKSZ) and the Hungarian Government have already protested against the educational law and the language law, predicting that violations of rights suffered by national minorities and committed by various authorities could have serious consequences. The armed intervention is a continuation of all of this.

On November 30, armed commandos of the Ukrainian Security Service (SZBU) attacked Hungarian organizations in Transcarpathia, namely the Foundation for the Hungarian College of Transcarpathia, the Egán Ede Transcarpathian Economic Development Center Charity Foundation and the KMKSZ headquarters in Uzhhorod, along with the apartment of László Brenzovics, President of KMKSZ, in Uzhhorod.  Armed members of the security service had a valid search warrant issued in a remote county of Ukraine, Zaporizhia, on November 23 and carried out the armed action on charges of separatism.

This serious atrocity is part of an unacceptable process in which the Ukrainian Government has been trampling on national minority rights for years. KMKSZ and the Hungarian Government have already protested against the education law and the language law and predicted that violations of rights suffered by national minorities and committed by various authorities could have serious consequences. According to the Fidesz-KDNP Delegation to the European Parliament, the attack was politically motivated and aimed at intimidation and pressure. The coordinated raid against legitimate organizations of the Hungarian minority evokes the methods of the Stalinist totalitarian system, which is unacceptable in a state governed by the rule of law. In a country that has repeatedly declared its intention to integrate into the European Union and NATO, it is unacceptable for such cases to occur, we therefore take the initiative in the European Parliament to put this unprecedented infringement on the agenda for the December plenary session.
