The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union presented its environmental and climate policy priorities to the European Parliament. Barbara Pompili, France’s minister responsible for green transition, emphasized that the French presidency was focusing on helping to make the EU green transition. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the plans of the EU presidency. “The work of the Presidency and its supportive approach to expand sustainable energies could be key in order to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050”, she said.
In the program of the French presidency, it was confirmed that the so-called EU taxonomy regulation will speed up the removal of other harmful sources and help us move towards more environmentally friendly solutions.
According to MEP Edina Tóth, without nuclear energy, the Union would be much more vulnerable to crises such as we have experienced in recent months, and the transition would not be possible, as renewable energy sources alone are not enough to meet the already increased energy needs and keep overhead costs low.
“Taking into account scientific situation and current technological developments, as well as the fact that Member States face different challenges for the transition, natural gas and nuclear energy are indispensable tools to facilitate the transition and ensure the sustainability of overhead reductions”, MEP Tóth emphasized.
