Today’s plenary session of the European Parliament debated the conclusions of the extraordinary European Council of 30-31 May. In her speech, Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál said that “we Hungarians want to win peace and we are ready to make sacrifices for it. Therefore, Hungary, as it has supported all sanctions packages so far, sought a common solution for the sixth sanctions package. The fact that we did not support the sanctioning of religious leaders in the text of the conclusions also serves the goal of peace. There can be no peace without religious leaders. Although there were visible fault lines on the European stage, it is a great victory that we have preserved the unity of the EU.”
Kinga Gál, Vice President of Fidesz, said that “we have managed to reach a good compromise: oil can continue to be transported via pipelines in Hungary, just as the Cypriots, Maltese and Greeks can continue to transport Russian oil on their tankers.”
The MEP concluded that “the Hungarian government is primarily responsible for Hungary. We do not support any sanctions that would cause more harm to Hungarian families than they do to the Russian aggressor. With the current agreement, we have also successfully defended the utility cost reduction programme for Hungarian families.”
MEP Kinga Gál added that Hungary is in favour of peace as soon as possible. Hungary, as a Christian Democratic state, does not support sanctions against religious leaders.
