The European Parliament held a debate on the proposal for the reform of EP-elections during its June plenary session. Fidesz MEP László Trócsányi pointed out that the debate was in fact a way of asserting pressure by the European Parliament’s federalist forces against the Member States.
MEP László Trócsányi, a representative of Fidesz in the EP emphasized that “the idea of introducing the so-called transnational lists is an attempt by the left-wing parties to reduce the influence of the Member States, to water down the rights of their citizens leading to such rights becoming mere formal declarations. In fact, it is aimed at creating a United States of Europe, it is anti-democratic and goes against the Treaties of the European Union.”
According to the MEP, the proposal would deepen the gap between voters and European politicians. “The introduction of transnational lists would mean that Hungarian voters could be forced to vote for a list that does not include a single Hungarian representative. Gradually, Member States would be compelled to increasingly give up the right of their national parties to nominate candidates”, emphasized MEP László Trócsányi.
The representatives of the concept of a federal European Union are misled; they aim to blackmail the Member States with this debate. However, the Member States have the right to decide on European election rules. “The Member States are the masters of the Treaties, not the European Parliament,” concluded MEP László Trócsányi.
