The political attack on the Enlargement Commissioner is derogatory

2023. 01. 23.

“There is a real hysteria around the person of Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, which of course can also serve as a distraction from the recent corruption scandal involving a left-wing politician. The reality is that the Enlargement Commissioner’s professional performance is outstanding, his statements represent the official position of the EU, which is also confirmed by the point of view of the Commission’s spokesperson” said MEP Kinga Gál, president of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, regarding the vote on the annual report on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy.

The annual report on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy has been voted on today in the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg. Following the vote, MEP Kinga Gál stressed that activist-style parliamentary reports that characterise NGOs are harmful to the EU’s foreign policy as a whole. “As I stressed in my speech yesterday, an example of this is the unprecedented and undeserved criticism in the foreign affairs report of the European Commission’s Enlargement Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, who has played a key role in reinvigorating the EU’s enlargement policy. This is unacceptable”, the MEP added.

There is a real hysteria around the person of Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, which of course can also serve as a distraction from the recent Brussels corruption scandal in the European Parliament”, said MEP Kinga Gál. In contrast, the reality is that the Enlargement Commissioner has an outstanding professional record and his official statements represent the official position of the European Union. This is confirmed by the Commission spokesperson’s statement that the Commissioner’s work is based on a revised methodology that puts even more emphasis on democracy, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental rights” the MEP stressed.

“The accusations of the anti-enlargement left without factual evidence are a serious risk for the future of the European Union, as they could even be a serious obstacle to enlargement. In addition, Olivér Várhelyi is also focusing on practical aspects of the EU accession countries that are of economic benefit to the EU, such as the development of infrastructure and energy networks, the transition to green energy, and the contribution to certain key investments”, said MEP Kinga Gál.
