Five political groups in the European Parliament have sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen requesting her to stop the payment of funds to Poland for its European Recovery Plan on account of the country’s alleged lack of rule of law. Commenting on the letter, MEP Kinga Gál, President of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament underlined that “the letter of the five political groups is unacceptable and further evidence of open political blackmail. Now, when a Member State is facing an emergency, solidarity should be expressed instead of stabbing Poland in the back”.
The five political groups in the EP have written to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, asking her not to accept the Polish recovery plan and thus not to disburse the European Recovery Plan funds to Poland because of the rule of law criteria. “The EU should be assuring Poland of its solidarity in the emergency at the Polish border for its efforts to protect the EU’s external borders, but instead of a letter of support, the left-wing majority in the EP is once again resorting to threats and blackmail”, MEP Kinga Gál pointed out.
“The letter of the five left-wing groups in the EP is unacceptable and proves that the EPP is shifting further towards the left. This is open political blackmail, without any legal basis under the Treaties. Furthermore, it comes at a time when such a letter should be about standing up for the Polish people. For years, solidarity has been expressed when it comes to the distribution of migrants among Member States. Now, when Poland is entitled to full solidarity because of the situation along its eastern border, it is being stabbed in the back. They are calling for the freezing of money Poland is rightly owed, which is pure political blackmail. The recovery fund is not a handout; it is due to all Member States”, the MEP stressed.
