The European Parliament is playing the role of political police

2021. 06. 09.

During Wednesday afternoon’s plenary session of the European Parliament, the EP’s left-wing majority demanded the immediate launch of a rule of law procedure against Hungary and Poland for the withdrawal of EU funds. In his speech, Fidesz MEP Ádám Kósa stressed that “the clear aim of the European left is to punish those who disagree with them, who say no to illegal migration, to the stealthy removal of national powers, to gender madness. Unfortunately, this is nothing new.”

MEP Kósa stressed: the European Commission is following the right procedure by waiting for the European Court of Justice’s decision. “We know very well that Hungary is particularly in the crosshairs of the Left, and the Hungarian Left is also a prominent player in the witch-hunt against Hungary. No wonder the leftist majority in the European Parliament is using every means at its disposal to punish dissenters,” the MEP added.

MEP Kósa expressed his disappointment that the EPP had given in to pressure from the Left. “The EPP is serving the Left’s demands and assisting in the transformation of the European Parliament from a co-legislative institution into a political police force, and this fills me with deep sadness,” he concluded.

According to Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi, the Left has been abusing the concept of the rule of law for years, and now it has taken it to a new level, threatening to cut off EU funds. The MEP added that the left-wing majority in the European Parliament is committing an assassination attempt against European unity by waging a political campaign in a legal guise. “Ideological bullying only undermines the unity of the Union and creates fault lines,” he added.

Background: Regulation 2020/2092 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the general conditions for the protection of the EU budget was adopted by the co-legislators on 16 December 2020. As part of the budget negotiations, EU Heads of State and Government agreed that the mechanism protects the EU’s financial interests and cannot be used for political or ideological purposes. The regulation has been challenged by Hungary and Poland before the Court of Justice of the European Union, pending a ruling on the case. The European Commission has undertaken not to apply the regulation while the case is pending before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
