The European Parliament can stoop no lower than what they are doing in the case of Hungary

2024. 01. 17.

“It is shameful and absurd that the European Parliament wants to suspend Hungary’s voting rights because we disagree on important political issues. They can stoop no lower”, said Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi during a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. In the context of the extraordinary EU summit on 1 February, MEP Tamás Deutsch, Head of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, stressed that Ukraine must be helped, but this must be done outside the EU budget and cannot be financed by a joint loan. He added that Hungary was ready to help Ukraine from its own budget.

MEP Tamás Deutsch stressed that it is ridiculous and absurd that the European Parliament is once again preoccupied with Hungary. “They are attacking us because we say no to migration, no to gender madness, and because Hungary still believes that an immediate ceasefire and peace talks are needed in Ukraine,” he said.

He added that Hungary is ready to support Ukraine, but would like financial assistance to Ukraine to be provided outside the EU budget. Hungary does not want to take out a joint loan, but is ready to provide Ukraine with the money from its national budget.

During the debate, MEP Ádám Kósa pointed out “that according to the European Commission – the only body empowered by the EU treaties – Hungary has met the requirements of the rule of law in the field of justice. This is a fact. If you really hold all Member States to the same standards, then take action against the Polish violations! Then I will believe you are concerned about the rule of law and nothing else”.

On the EU budget, MEP Balázs Hidvéghi stressed that every euro cent Hungary is owed must be paid. “Ideological blackmail is unacceptable. If you want to see real problems with the rule of law, you should be more concerned about Poland instead”, the MEP pointed out.

Referring to the European Parliament’s proposal to suspend Hungary’s voting rights, Hidvéghi said that in dictatorships, instead of debate, they try to silence those who disagree. “You are digging the grave of the European Union. Wake up and stop this madness”, the MEP concluded.
