Press Release by MEP Balázs Hidvéghi
The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee held a debate on Monday evening on the situation of the rule of law in Hungary and Poland. In his intervention, Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi underlined that the European left only worries about the rule of law when it comes to governments that oppose migration and are Christian-conservative, while it is silent when socialist governments are concerned.
The Council of the European Union composed of ministers of the Member States held its second hearing regarding the situation of the rule of law in Hungary last week. The Finnish Council Presidency informed the LIBE Committee about the hearing and presented its conclusions on the evaluation of the annual rule of law dialogue.
EPP Group MEP Balázs Hidvéghi highlighted on the debate that the European left is only concerned about the rule of law when it comes to countries that oppose migration, led by Christian-conservative governments. He underlined that the left remains silent about the murder of the Maltese journalist because Malta has a socialist government. „Suddenly, the rule of law is not that important anymore” – said MEP Hidvéghi.
The MEP added that Hungary is open for dialogue and has answered to all of the allegations with legal arguments, however, the procedure is still of political nature. He believes that Hungary is being criticised because of its firm migration policy and its Christian-conservative position, which is disliked by the European pro-migration parties.
