The EU must not apply a double standard in regards to the respect of human rights

2022. 02. 24.

Today, the European Parliament (EP) debated a report on the state of human rights and democracy in the world in 2021, which included proposals submitted by Fidesz and KDNP representatives for the protection of national minorities.

MEP Andrea Bocskor emphasized during the discussion: “Monitoring the situation of human rights and democracy is very important. Therefore, it is good that this report has been completed, which also includes the protection of national minorities. The EU must monitor the protection of the fundamental rights of national minorities, especially in its partner countries. However, the EU applies a double standard in responding to different human rights violations.”

“In Ukraine, despite international commitments, the rights of national minorities are being drastically curtailed, and there is strong assimilation. The Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia has been intimidated several times, and their representatives have been subjected to atrocities. The so-called “death list” of the Myrotvorets website illegally listed the personal data of thousands of people, including my personal information. This has been condemned by both the EP and the EU foreign affairs commissioners, but the site is still operational,” added the MEP.

“Apart from the positive elements, some parts of the report are unacceptable! This includes the introduction of qualified majority voting, urging ratification of the Istanbul Convention based on gender mainstreaming, or the creation of legal migration routes,” concluded MEP Andrea Bocskor.
