The EU must finally help Member States protect their external borders

2021. 11. 28.

The European Parliament held a debate on the emergency migration situation at the Belarusian-Polish border. MEP Kinga Gál, Vice-President of Fidesz, emphasized during the debate: “I want to express my respect and solidarity towards the Polish people, who are determined to protect their own borders, which are also the Union’s external borders.” The European Union and the Schengen system are common values and we have a duty to protect them”, stated Fidesz MEP Andrea Bocskor.

“If a Member State protects its external borders, it should receive solidarity and financial support, not betrayal. However, that is exactly what happened last week, when – in the middle of the migrant crisis – five EP political groups demanded Poland to be punished”, pointed out MEP Kinga Gál.

“It must finally be stated that the current EU legal framework does not provide adequate crisis management tools for Member States under migratory pressure, and this needs to be changed urgently”, concluded MEP Gál.

“We, Hungarians, fully understand the problem Poland is facing and assure the Poles of our solidarity. The EU constantly demands solidarity from the Member States, but now the most urgent is providing efficient help for Polish border guards to protect the external borders of the EU”, stressed MEP Andrea Bocskor.

The MEP emphasized: „The EU should change its flawed migration policy and should do everything possible to ensure, that those who besiege the EU borders can return home as soon as possible and receive help there so that they can see their future in home countries”.
