The European People’s Party group has delegated Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi to the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol).
Europol is the EU’s most important institution for police cooperation, which, as an EU agency, helps Member States’ law enforcement authorities to cooperate in the fight against serious criminality, organized crime and terrorism. Its role is to support Member States’ law enforcement authorities, in particular through data collection, analysis, information exchange and coordination tools.
Political control of Europol is carried out by national parliaments together with the European Parliament through a joint monitoring group. The audit covers the activities of Europol, including their impact on fundamental rights and freedom.
“Europol aims to contribute to the success of Member States’ law enforcement authorities by helping them to be effective and efficient. Its work helps to create a secure Europe. The proper functioning of this institution is in the interest of all European citizens. It is therefore essential that the appropriate support is accompanied by a thorough monitoring, and that the Agency carries out its work in accordance with the relevant legislation, and within the legal framework. It is a great honour to participate in the work of the joint monitoring group”, said Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi.
