The costs of climate protection should not be settled by citizens but by climate destroyers

2021. 06. 09.

The European Parliament held a debate on the conclusions of the European Council of 24 – 25 May. In her speech, Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the commitment of EU Member States to the fight against climate change and to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe for 2050. She recalled, however, that the costs of climate protection should not be paid by citizens but by climate destroyers.

In her plenary speech, the Fidesz politician drew attention to the need to lay down key principles before taking further steps to achieve climate protection goals: achieving climate neutrality must not impose additional burdens on citizens, but must be paid for by large companies that destroy climate. She stressed that it is important that the introduction of new rules do not lead to higher energy, food and fuel prices. She also recalled that respect for the principle of technology neutrality is essential in order to reduce CO2 emissions.

The MEP emphasized that Hungary opposed the idea of including the energy use of buildings in the emissions trading scheme, as this would oblige households to pay significant costs. She believes that the Commission did not act responsibly in setting out its preliminary plans. “Before presenting an EU legislative proposal, thorough impact assessments are definitely needed, and only by the knowledge of this, any substantive negotiations or any commitments can be made,” she added.
