The building blocks of Europe are our traditional communities: the nation, family and historical Churches

At the session of the Hungarian National Assembly, MPs debated the Hungarian position on the future of the European Union. MEP Tamás Deutsch, Head of of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, as the keynote speaker of Fidesz, pointed out that the EU is today building a Europe that denies traditional European values, but Hungarians believe that Europe is nourished by its Judeo-Christian roots, and its building blocks are our traditional communities: the nation, family and historical Churches.

MEP Tamás Deutsch, keynote speaker of the governing party, thanked all Hungarians who actively participated and expressed their opinions in the process.

Explaining the Hungarian position, he said that Hungarians do not regard integration with the EU as an end in itself but as a means to “expand our national freedom”. He pointed out that today the EU is building a Europe that denies traditional European values, but Hungarians believe that Europe is nourished by its Judeo-Christian roots, and its building blocks are our traditional communities: the nation, family and historic religious congregations. “Today the EU is building a Europe without Europeans, whereas Hungarians see the future of Europe in family support and in strengthening the desire to have children”, he underlined.

The Head of the Fidesz EP delegation pointed out that the EU is building a Europe based on the hegemony of opinion, but Hungarians are in favour of freedom and pluralism, and they believe that Member States are the masters of the future of European integration, as opposed to building a Europe without nations. “Today the EU is building a Europe without democracy, while Hungarians maintain that our Europeanism is an integral part of our national identity”, he stressed.

He also noted that the EU is building a vulnerable Europe today, but our decade is an era of dangerous challenges, where present and future generations of Europeans must be protected because crises have shown the EU’s weaknesses. He underlined that a competitive EU should be built on the competitiveness of its Member States.

He also stressed the importance of the EU’s enlargement to the Western Balkans. “Hungary supports the European integration of all Balkan states because it will contribute to the stability of the neighbourhood. However, Serbia’s integration process is of paramount importance because the country is the key to stability in the region”, he said, adding that the draft parliamentary resolution also enshrines the EU’s guarantee of the rights of indigenous national minorities.

MEP Deutsch stated as well that the proposals, which were put together with the active participation of a large number of Hungarian citizens, could have been backed by a broad parliamentary or even national consensus, but instead we witnessed only sulking and hysteria from opposition parties.
