The Brussels bureaucracy and the European left want to ban new petrol and diesel cars!

2023. 02. 14.

A left-wing majority in the European Parliament (EP) has voted today in favour of the Commission’s proposal to ban the sale of new cars and light commercial vehicles with internal combustion engines in the EU from 2035. According to Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth, Brussels’ new rules will further increase the price of new cars, while people’s wallets will be squeezed by war and sanctions inflation.

According to MEP Edina Tóth, the time available is extremely short given that there is currently neither an adequate charging infrastructure, nor sufficient demand for the use of exclusively non-internal combustion engine cars, and therefore the average age of vehicles will continue to increase.

So far, we have been trusting common sense that in a situation of war and a sanctions crisis, the left-wing majority in the EP would not want to “execute” combustion engines, but this has not been the case. “While the European right, which opposed a complete phase-out, presented an environmentally friendly solution and put forward thoughtful proposals on the use of synthetic fuels, the left, in its ideological blindness, enthusiastically supported ill-considered rules that would destroy the competitiveness of the EU and make people’s lives more difficult”, the MEP added.

In a critical environment, this decision is a serious misstep! Instead of technological bans, we need to think about alternative options, and that is why we will continue to fight!” the MEP said closing her speech.
