Strengthening the European Medicines Agency cannot place more burden on Member States

2021. 07. 08.

At the plenary session, the European Parliament held a debate on strengthening the European Medicines Agency. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth in her plenary speech highlighted that health and economic crises caused by the pandemic has proved: “Member States can act quickly and efficiently”, while the joint procurement of vaccines led by Brussels has failed.

“In order to improve the EU coordination of the response to health emergencies, it is important to strengthen the role of the European Medicines Agency, but this must not be done at the expense of the Member States’ competences,” emphasised the MEP.

On the European Parliament’s proposal on strengthening the role of the European Medicines Agency, MEP Edina Tóth pointed out: “Paragraphs of the proposed legislation on the medicines supply database are disproportionate and would place an unjustified burden on Member States and European businesses”.

“It is therefore important that we do not complicate the already difficult pandemic management of Member States with new tasks,” concluded MEP Tóth.
