Yesterday plenary session of the European Parliament, the European Commission’s communication guidelines were discussed, which were initiated and withdrawn by the Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli in the wake of an international outcry. Fidesz MEPs Enikő Győri, Edina Tóth and Balázs Hidvéghi pointed out in the debate that it was under Communism that we last had to say “Pine Holiday” instead of Christmas and “Uncle Winter” instead of Santa Claus. They regard the guidelines as an attack on Christian traditions and they have called on Commissioner Helena Dalli to resign immediately.
In the debate, MEP Enikő Győri stressed that “Brussels has launched a cultural war in the name of political correctness. The Holy Father calls this ideological colonialism, and I say enough is enough: Enough of those who feel entitled to formulate dictates”. On the withdrawal of the document for revision, she said: “The Commission’s idea to operate a language watchdog is in itself outrageous. It should not be corrected but thrown away, and Ms Dalli should be dismissed immediately by the President of the Commission.”
MEP Edina Tóth warned of the dangerous direction the Commission was taking with this initiation. The proposal to abolish the word “Christmas” is not only appalling but “a declaration of war on our culture and traditions and an attempt to discredit our Christian identity”.
In his speech, MEP Balázs Hidvéghi said, addressing the European People’s Party: “This is what your constant policy of submission has led to. This is what will happen if you give in to every crazy left-wing idea. Don’t you think it is a shame that all this could happen under an EPP-led European Commission?” The MEP called on Commissioner Helena Dalli to resign immediately.
