The European Parliament debated the role of the EU in tackling the Covid-19 epidemic with the title: “How to vaccinate the world?”. Fidesz MEP Ernő Schaller-Baross emphasized that vaccines were the only solution. “It is essential for Member States to have safe and affordable coronavirus vaccines available worldwide”, he said.
During the debate, Commissioner Kyriakides reported on the results of the EU vaccine sharing mechanism. The mechanism allows Member States to share their vaccinations with third countries.
MEP Ernő Schaller-Baross emphasized: “Hungary can do it to help those in difficulty; the Hungarian government has recently donated more than one million doses of vaccines to African countries”. He called on the Commission to ensure transparency in the EU’s global response and to help prepare health systems in countries of destination.
“The EU has recently contracted to procure a vaccine based on decades of proven viral technology, such as Eastern vaccines that the EU still does not approve”. he added.
“Different vaccines should not be treated as an ideological or political issue as they are a means of saving lives. Only vaccination provides protection against a pandemic”, concluded the Fidesz politician.
