It’s time to end corruption, hypocrisy and double standards in Brussels!

2024. 01. 22.

The European Parliament voted in Wednesday’s plenary session on the annual report of the European Ombudsman’s activities in 2022. According to MEP Tamás Deutsch, Head of the Fidesz Delegation to the European Parliament, it is welcome that the proposal aims to tighten rules on conflicts of interest, transparency and ethics. “The corruption cases in Brussels have made it clear that systemic corruption pervades the Brussels bureaucracy. Rightly, the proposal also calls on the dubious case of vaccine procurement by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The Brussels bureaucracy is constantly lecturing Hungary on the fight against corruption and the rule of law, when it should be cleaning up its own house! It’s time to put an end to this hypocrisy and double standards; we need a change in Brussels”, the MEP added.

As a member of the Committee on Petitions, MEP Tamás Deutsch was pleased to see that the report pays more attention to strict compliance with conflicts of interest, transparency, and ethical obligations.

“The revelations of serious corruption cases in Brussels have made it clear to everyone that the Brussels bureaucracy is pervaded by systemic corruption and gross external interference and that there are serious problems with accountability within the EU institutions”, said the MEP.

“I am pleased that the Parliament’s proposal also draws attention to the cover-up of the corruption case involving the President of the Commission, because it is unacceptable that the Commission could not find the text messages exchanged between the President and the CEO of a pharmaceutical company regarding the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines and that they therefore could not be made public”, added MEP Tamás Deutsch.

According to the Head of the Fidesz Delegation to the European Parliament, it is welcome that these extremely serious cases of corruption and serious suspicions of corruption are addressed in the European Parliament’s proposal. “Hungary is constantly being lectured by the Brussels bureaucracy about the fight against corruption and the rule of law, when it would be better if it cleaned up its own house. The protagonists of corruption cases continue to sit among us and no progress has been made in investigating the scandalous text messages. It is time to put an end to this hypocrisy and double standards; we need change in Brussels”, concluded MEP Tamás Deutsch after the vote.
