It’s time for digital platforms to contribute to public spending

2022. 07. 05.

The legislative package on digital services and markets adopted by the European Parliament in plenary today is of key importance, as it aims to create a transparent and secure online space. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the proposal, which means that giant platforms will no longer set the rules of the game for themselves and that minors will be efficiently protected from the effects of harmful content.

MEP Edina Tóth underlined that the significant social impact of digital platforms is felt by all of us as they influence our habits and decisions on a daily basis. “It is important that, thanks to the new proposal, global tech companies can no longer arbitrarily set the rules of the game, leaving users completely at their mercy”, she added.

Social media can pose an increased risk for minors, making it easier for our children to become victims of harassment, violence or bullying in the digital space. It is therefore welcome that the proposal stands up for the protection of minors; technology giants should no longer be allowed to publish personalised advertising for our children. “I trust that in the future, the principle that what is illegal offline should also be illegal online will be effectively enforced”, the MEP stressed.

She also emphasised that the next steps should take into account that taxing the digital economy is a global issue, thus an international solution is urgently needed. It is time for digital tech giants to contribute their fair share to public costs!
