The discrimination against Hungarian students and researchers and the disregard of the opinion of the rectors of Hungarian universities regarding the punitive measures taken by Brussels concerning the Erasmus and Horizon programmes are unacceptable, and we have again called the European Commission to account for its actions. We find it outrageous that the European Commission is shirking its responsibility in its response. The restrictive measures for Hungarian students and researchers must be lifted immediately!
Fidesz MEPs have asked the European Commission in a written question how universities, students and researchers can be punished because of their political disputes with the Hungarian government. In our questions, we strongly protested that Hungarian researchers and students are being deprived of opportunities due to a politically motivated decision. We have also asked the Commission on what basis it does not accept the opinion of the leaders elected by the autonomous bodies of the universities, because we are convinced that this behaviour is a real violation of the autonomy of the universities.
Fidesz MEP Andrea Bocskor said that “it is shocking to see how meaningless and cynical the answers to our questions were. At the same time, it has also shown that the European Commission does not take responsibility for the restrictions imposed on Hungarian students and researchers. We do not accept any excuses for the unjust discrimination against Hungarian students and researchers. We demand the only possible solution to the situation: the European Commission should immediately lift the punitive measures against Hungarian students and researchers.”
