At this week’s plenary sitting, members of the European Parliament debated a report on corruption and human rights. “It is not a question of supporting the strongest action against corruption inside and outside the EU. At the same time, I find it questionable and reprehensible that this anti-corruption report is marked by the name of a politician, who is involved in a serious, multi-billion forint fraud case, which is still pending, “said MEP Kinga Gal, President of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament.
The rapporteur, Katalin Cseh, is involved in a fraud involving EU public funds and is currently under investigation. The company led by the representative and businesses connected to her family, according to well-founded suspicions, operated as a network of companies draining domestic and EU development funds at a systemic level.
The report also covers the introduction of qualified majority voting, about which she said the following: “The introduction of qualified majority voting is contrary to the EU Treaties and could even be used as a political extortion tool against smaller Member States who would not be able to pursue their interests in EU foreign policy. MEP Kinga Gal emphasized that she is convinced that a strong European Union is based on sovereign Member States, but the voting mechanism mentioned in the Cseh report would undermine these principles.
