Instead of being a smart aleck, Brussels should finally ask people about the sanctions

2022. 10. 18.

The European Parliament (EP) debated the economic and social impacts of the war in Ukraine on Europe during its plenary session today. In his speech, Fidesz MEP András Gyürk said that the main reason for the crisis is Brussels’ failed response to the war, that is, the energy prices that have become unbearable due to the sanctions. The way out of the crisis is only possible with broad social support.

Europe has entered into a serious crisis. Brutal utility bills, failing industries and small businesses struggling to survive are the hallmarks of European countries today. “The reason is clear – the war and the misguided response to it. In other words, a poorly designed sanctions policy. This is why energy prices are unbearable today”, pointed out the Hungarian MEP.

The solution is to rethink the sanctions policy, because energy supply is a physical and not an ideological question. “We cannot risk the energy security of European citizens. We cannot put their jobs at risk. We must pursue a policy that has the support of the people. This is the purpose of the national consultation on sanctions in Hungary”, said the Fidesz politician.

“That is why it is unacceptable that Brussels is withholding more than 650 billion euros in funding. Now, every Member State must receive the funds it is entitled to immediately so that those funds can reach citizens as soon as possible”, András Gyürk stressed.
