The European Parliament’s plenary session adopted its position on artificial intelligence (AI) legislation, which could be the first comprehensive AI regulation in the world. According to Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth, “artificial intelligence has many applications and potential. However, it is clear that AI cannot remain unregulated”. Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi said that today’s vote is an important milestone in the development of a regulation that can address citizens’ fears and risks of AI while not over-regulating or hampering innovation.
MEP Edina Tóth underlined the importance of transparency and traceability. “We support innovation, but we must also think about the potential risks of its use and regulate them with due care. I am confident that this legislation can provide the legal framework to make AI a safe tool for citizens and businesses. The fact that my speech during the parliamentary debate was also written by artificial intelligence is a good indication of the development of AI systems”, the Fidesz politician stressed.
MEP Balázs Hidvéghi said that we must strive for a final regulation that is human-centred and focuses on consumer protection. “In order to increase public confidence in AI, we must first identify and filter out risks. Preference should be given to those uses that benefit people and society. It is encouraging that European legislation is following this approach”, the MEP said.
