The European Parliament adopted its motion for resolution on standardised dimensions for carry-on luggage. MEP Tamás Deutsch, Head of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, and Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the initiative, since, besides standardizing the size of carry-on luggage, would urge the abolishment of misleading advertising, which could mean hidden baggage fees when purchasing a ticket.
MEP Edina Tóth emphasized that weight and size standards can vary wildly between airlines, which can often lead to uncomfortable travel experiences, delays, and sometimes arguments between air passengers and airline staff. „Airlines ultimately force consumers to accumulate different sizes of carry-on bags at home due to their controversial rules” – added the MEP.
MEP Tamács Deutsch said: It has become known that low-cost airlines do business by selling tickets in such a way that the extra fee for carrying hand luggage is hidden until the end of the purchase. Ambiguous advertising can therefore mislead consumers into believing they are getting a better deal than they actually are. There is also great concern that search engines may give an unfair advantage to airlines advertising these ultra-low fares”.
„It is time that the European Union deals with the real problems of the internal market and the effective protection of consumers, instead of ideological debates and false solutions,” – added the Fidesz MEP.
