The post-election situation in Serbia was on the agenda of today’s session of the European Parliament. Fidesz MEP Andor Deli from Vojvodina, pointed out that such debates are very damaging and that the European Parliament should show more respect and understanding for Serbia. According to MEP Kinga Gál, President of the Fidesz Delegation to the European Parliament, the attacks on the Serbian government prove once again that the left cannot accept the results of democratic elections and applies double standards when sovereignist forces win.
“The liberal majority in the EP is using the same scenario against Serbia that it has been using to discredit Hungary, unsuccessfully, since 2010. On this basis, the liberal opposition and the MEPs of the Dollar left are trying to turn their domestic failures into successes, not through democratic elections but with external help. But this is a failed tactic for Hungary and it will not work for Serbia either. Perhaps the difference is that Hungary is already a member of the EU, while Serbia has not even joined yet, but the smear campaigns against it in the European Parliament have already started”, MEP Deli stressed. He added that “in recent years, the EU’s credibility, however, in the whole Western Balkans region has been greatly diminished — not only because of the EU’s inertia and rigidity, but also because of the exaggerated and biased opinions that are constantly expressed here in the EP”.
MEP Kinga Gál rightly asks: “What kind of concept of democracy is it that only recognises the results of democratic elections when they suit the liberal world, while in the opposite case, when sovereignist forces win, it immediately threatens to abolish the rule of law and goes on the offensive?”
“The attacks on the Serbian government prove once again that the leftist forces cannot accept defeat and do not respect the will of the majority of voters and the results of democratic elections. They look down on the people,” the Fidesz MEP stressed.
MEP Kinga Gál added that this behaviour was irresponsible and contrary to European interests. Moreover, unfounded criticism could fundamentally disrupt the integration prospects of Serbia and the entire region, as well as confidence in the EU institutions, while Serbia’s accession to the EU as soon as possible is crucial for the European Union.
“It is time to put an end to double standards and restore the normal perception of democracy in Europe”, said MEP Kinga Gál.
