Greater respect for professional drivers

2023. 10. 09.

The European Parliament’s plenary held a debate on the lack of safe and secure truck parking areas and the unacceptable hygienic conditions prevailing there on Thursday afternoon. In his speech, Fidesz MEP Andor Deli asked the European Commission to review the legal framework in order to achieve effective changes in improving the working conditions of professional drivers and in valuing the profession.

“I am not at all surprised that today we have to discuss the lack of parking areas for trucks. Already years ago, during the negotiations on the Mobility package, we drew attention to the fact that mandatory spending of rest time outside the cabin would not be able to work in practice since even then there were not enough safe and secure parking and rest areas. However, the European Parliament and the European Commission swept away these concerns by saying that the situation will be resolved quickly with the help of EU subsidies by the time the legislation enters into force. However, we must see that no change has taken place. Therefore, I would now once again ask the European Commission to review the legal framework and come up with legislative proposals and support tools, thanks to which a quick and effective change can be achieved in improving the working conditions of professional drivers, which would also mean greater respect for the profession,” MEP Deli concluded his speech.
