The European Parliament debated on the LIFE programme which is the only EU level programme that focuses exclusively on the environment and the fight against climate change, and provides financial resources for, among others, the conservation of flora and fauna and the development of habitats of European importance. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the fact that a number of new environmental projects could play a key role in the programme due to the increased financial resources of EUR 5.4 billion. For example, the programme supports the transition to a circular economy, which is particularly important for Hungary, and, together with other programs, serves the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the EU by 2050.
According to MEP Edina Tóth, our sustainability goals can only be achieved if we address climate and environmental challenges as opportunities in all policy areas. Therefore, in order to restore biodiversity and reduce pollution, we need to identify the investments needed and the resources available.
In her plenary speech, the Fidesz MEP emphasized that in many cases LIFE projects highlight inconsistencies in political decisions at EU level. Responding to MEP Sándor Rónai (Democratic Coalition) on the distribution mechanism, she emphasized that environmental developments did require central coordination of Member States, as they cut across several regions. “Sustainability projects are not completed in points, in isolation, but in a network. Without coordination of Member States, EU environmental developments cannot be successful ”, the Fidesz politician added.
According to MEP Edina Tóth however, environmental and sustainability policy stands or fails on being accepted by citizens. Therefore, the LIFE programme has to be communicated to the people at EU level in a better way since it can be a very valuable help in the field of environmental protection.
