Enough of the double standards on the rule of law!

2023. 01. 18.

According to Fidesz MEPs Balázs Hidvéghi and Enikő Győri, while the Left in Brussels is constantly attacking Hungary and Poland with false accusations regarding the rule of law, they are turning a blind eye to serious concerns about the rule of law in Spain. “What is this if not a classic case of double standards?” – the MEPs asked.

According to Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi, the socialist Spanish government has been taking steps for years that raise concerns about the rule of law. “Interestingly, no rule of law proceeding is initiated against Spain, nor do they want to withdraw EU funds from Spain. Simply because there is a left-wing government in power that is willing to accept all kinds of crazy ideas and ideologies from Brussels,” said Hidvéghi. “The same rules shall apply to everyone, even if we are talking about the socialist Spanish government,” said MEP Hidvéghi.

MEP Enikő Győri emphasized that the left-wing Sanchez government is playing to the extreme Left, and its programme consists of dismantling the rule of law and freedoms, interfering with private life and threatening the everyday security of Spaniards. “And do you have the courage to criticize the Hungarian rule of law?”, MEP Győri asked. “It is outrageous that the socialist Spanish government uses EU recovery funds in a non-transparent manner while blackmailing the Commission into withholding EU money from Hungary”. Lastly, she asked Commissioner Reynders when they will finally take action against the left-wing Spanish government, “or will only the freedom-loving and family-friendly conservative governments be targeted?”, concluded the MEP.
