Edina Tóth elected Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence

Edina Tóth has been elected Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in the Digital Age. The new EP special committee examines the implications and challenges of the emergence of artificial intelligence and sets an agenda for the European Union, completes with objectives and steps to achieve them.

The election of a Fidesz MEP is recognition of the work in recent years and the success of the Hungarian delegation of the European People’s Party. With the acquisition of the role of Vice-Chair, Hungary’s position in the field of digital internal market regulation will be further strengthened in the European Parliament.

Edina Tóth said, “I am pleased and proud that, after the European People’s Party, the members attending the inaugural meeting of the Special Committee today also expressed their support. As Vice-Chair of the AIDA Special Committee, I will work to consult constructively with stakeholders, including businesses, academia and civil society, to put the requirements into practice.”

The EPP politician has pointed out that artificial intelligence can also bring benefits in many areas, such as healthcare, vehicle safety and climate change. At the same time, artificial intelligence poses new challenges for the future of work and also raises legal and ethical issues. “For all these reasons, I will seek to promote an international exchange of views on people-centered artificial intelligence,” said Edina Tóth after the election.

In addition to the AIDA Special Committee, Enikő Győri, member of the Fidesz-KDNP Delegation is a member of the Subcommittee on Tax Matters; Lívia Járóka is a substitute member of the Special Committee on Cancer; Kinga Gál is a substitute member of the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the EU, including disinformation; and Balázs Hidvéghi is a member of the Animal Transport Inquiry Committee on alleged contraventions and maladministration in animal transport.

Background: The European Parliament decided to set up four special committees and one subcommittee on 19 June 2020. Pursuant to the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament, the Special Committees shall serve for a period of one year, renewable twice for a period of three months each. EP special committees, committees of inquiry and subcommittees do not adopt legislation.
