Despite the epidemic, employment is high in Hungary

2021. 05. 18.

The European Parliament debated the mobility of workers within the EU at last night’s plenary session. Fidesz MEP Ádám Kósa pointed out that although it has long been considered natural for workers to be free to choose which Member State they want to work in, the Brexit and then the coronavirus pandemic have also shown that working abroad can be difficult. “However, the difficulties encourage us to look for new solutions. Hungary is a positive example of this,” Kósa emphasized.

The Fidesz MEP set Hungary as a good example for the countries of the European Union, where, despite the epidemic, the number of jobs has been expanded. “In March 2021, 4.6 million people is working, which is 41,000 more than a year ago. Thus, the employment rate in Hungary was almost 72% in the first quarter of 2021, which almost reaches the target set at the Porto summit (78%), which makes our country definitely at the forefront of the EU,” MEP Kósa emphasized.

The representative added that the Hungarian government had financially helped to keep the jobs: the retail, tourism and hospitality sectors or in the provision of leisure services were all facing difficulties due to the closures. Therefore, the government paid more than HUF 73 billion in wage subsidies to nearly 30,000 companies and thus managed to preserve the jobs of 173,000 employees.
