Cool heads in a heated conflict – strategic calm is needed in European energy policy

2022. 03. 25.

The European Parliament plenary session debated proposals aimed at ensuring the security of energy supply and reducing public utility prices. The recent proposals from Brussels have proven that Hungary made the right decision by consistently standing up for the reduction of energy prices to protect the people, instead of pursuing reckless left-wing proposals. The Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament believes that it is of utmost importance that the EU supports national measures. “We must protect families from the consequences of soaring energy prices!” they stressed.

In her plenary speech, MEP Edina Tóth stressed the need for strategic calm in energy policy. “It is clear that the consistent Hungarian reduction of energy prices, focused on the protection of the people, has become a model to be followed throughout Europe! Let’s go ahead and protect families from high energy prices, that is our task now”, she added.

In her address, MEP Enikő Győri called on the Commission to consider the direct and indirect impact of the modernisation of the Energy Charter Treaty on the EU’s energy supply, supply chains, and last but not least, the wallets of EU citizens. “In addition to greening, affordability and security of supply must also be important considerations. The EU can only push for action that does not disproportionately disadvantage any Member State”, she pointed out.

MEP András Gyürk stressed that stable, well-functioning measures are needed instead of off-the-cuff left-wing proposals. “Even the European Commission recognises now that the best way to protect families from high energy prices is to introduce price caps, similar to the Hungarian cuts. In contrast, the left would drag us back to the path of self-surrender in energy policy. We must prevent this”, he stressed.

We agree with the objectives of greening, but it is important that the EU does not make European citizens pay the price. “Brussels should not burden Hungarian households with the cost of climate protection”, MEP Ernő Schaller-Baross underlined.
