“Despite all the high-sounding statements, Brussels has consistently made bad decisions in the past that have harmed the people of Europe”, Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi said in Strasbourg, during the plenary debate on the annual assessment of the state of the European Union. The MEP said that misguided sanctions from Brussels are destroying the European economy, while ideological attacks against Member States defending national interests are destroying cooperation and trust among Member States.
In his speech, MEP Balázs Hidvéghi said that Brexit, illegal migration, COVID, the war in Ukraine, and the ensuing economic crisis would all have required capable leadership and the right decisions. “Instead, we see ad hoc reactions and self-congratulating empty declarations from Brussels”, the MEP pointed out.
According to MEP Hidvéghi, the misguided Brussels sanctions have not brought the end of the war closer but have harmed the people of Europe, causing runaway inflation and a dramatic rise in prices. Continuous ideological attacks, as well as political and financial blackmail against Member States defending national interests, are tearing the European Union apart, while “the serious corruption scandal in Brussels and the Commission’s shameful vaccine procurement affair have not been properly addressed in Brussels”.
MEP Hidvéghi underlined that this is clearly weakening the European Union, creating divisions, destroying cooperation between Member States, undermining European competitiveness, and damaging the European economy. “Europe therefore needs change. We are working to ensure that in next year’s European Parliament elections, more sober forces, with the interests of the European people in mind, should be elected”, the MEP said in closing.
