Brussels bureaucrats want to ban talk of corruption scandals in Brussels during election campaigns

2023. 02. 02.

While corruption is rampant in the EU institutions, Brussels bureaucrats want to pass new EU legislation on political advertising to silence those who speak openly about corruption in Brussels during election campaigns. Commenting on the proposal, which was backed by a left-wing majority in the EP, Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth said that “this regulation is yet another step in the political and ideological pressure that Brussels is exerting to impose its will on Member States”.

MEP Edina Tóth stressed that “the real aim of the Brussels bureaucracy in regulating political advertising is to interfere in and influence the outcome of national election campaigns and to restrict opinions it does not favour”. According to the MEP, the draft regulation fails to take national interests into account and infringes on the sovereignty of Member States.

It is sad that instead of investigating its own corruption scandals and condemning the dollar left’s concealed 4 billion in foreign aid, the European Union is once again focusing on how to take powers away from the Member States. “In the political crisis caused by the corruption bribery scandals in Brussels, Brussels should not be in the business of re-regulating Member States”, the MEP added.
