At today’s plenary session, the European Parliament (EP) discussed the prospects for energy storage in Europe. Natural gas inventories played a key role in alleviating the energy crisis caused by the faulty sanctions policy. Furthermore, the future of the electricity market is unthinkable without major storage developments. Brussels and the left must therefore immediately stop blocking the sources that facilitate this.
We have managed to avoid the worst case scenario of the European energy crisis last winter. This is mainly due to the sacrifices made by the European people and businesses, as well as the high filling level of gas storage. Achieving a high filling level this year will also require a serious and coordinated effort.
Furthermore, electricity storage will become increasingly important in the future, therefore an efficient development process is needed. On the one hand, a stable regulatory environment and well-designed programs are required. On the other hand, related RDI development projects must be adequately supported.
Finally, the establishment of modern energy storage facilities is a capital-intensive process, for which all Member States must be granted access by the European Commission to their allocated resources. “That is why it is important that Brussels and the left do not further hinder energy independence and climate protection in Central Europe. As a first step, they must stop blocking the EU funds rightfully allocated to Hungary and Poland,” emphasized MEP András Gyürk.
