Another Central European Member State in the crossfire of political attacks

2021. 05. 20.

The European Parliament debated the alleged conflict of interest of the Czech Prime Minister, during which some MEPs called for the immediate start of the rule of law procedure against the Czechs and the freezing of EU financial assistance to the Czechs. In connection with the debate, Fidesz MEP Ádám Kósa emphasized that the MEP’s comments clearly showed that the European Parliament had embarked on another political punitive action.

In his written statement MEP Ádám Kósa emphasized that the Czech Republic and all EU Member States must comply with the rules on the use of EU funds and the provisions of the Financial Regulation. The European Commission is responsible for carrying out financial investigations, making recommendations and making the necessary corrections in the event of irregularities or conflicts of interest, in cooperation with the Member State concerned.

However, there is a clear political motive behind the European Parliament’s intervention. After Hungary and Poland, yet  another country of the Visegrad cooperation, the Czech Republic, has now become the target of political attacks. “Meanwhile, honourable colleagues are amazed that people are becoming disillusioned with the European Union and the EU is becoming increasingly unpopular. We need to be  concerned with the well-being of our citizens and their recovery from the pandemic instead of such with political witch-hunt!”
