European Artificial Intelligence Must Be Built on European Values!

Late on Tuesday evening, the European Parliament debated the report “Digitalisation, artificial intelligence and algorithmic management in the workplace – shaping the future of work”. In his intervention, Pál Szekeres, Member of the European Parliament for Fidesz and the Patriots’ shadow rapporteur on the report, pointed out: “Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot is particularly relevant today, because it approaches artificial intelligence not as a technical, but as a moral issue. We must know in advance which ethical and moral values will make European artificial intelligence truly European, in the shadow of the two major technological giants, the United States and China.”

Szekeres stressed: “Digitalisation holds enormous potential for increasing productivity. But technology must serve people, not the other way around!”

The MEP underlined: “Unfortunately, the left once again wants to impose new legislation on us, burdening small and medium-sized enterprises with additional bureaucracy and thereby undermining the very possibility of innovation. Fidesz says no to unnecessary burdens!” He added: “Instead of new legislation, what we need is the ethical implementation of our existing data protection and AI regulations, with proper human oversight.”

Szekeres concluded: “I believe that we need not only digital skills, but also ethics, communication and problem-solving abilities – and for that, we need moral and ethical reference points from early childhood onwards. Even in the age of digitalisation, the protection of European values remains essential.”
