The European Commission should not interfere in Poland’s domestic politics

2016. 09. 13.

Two Fidesz-KDNP MEPs wrote their objections to the Vice-President of the Commission in regard to the legally ungrounded procedure launched against Poland. In their letter, András Gyürk, Head of the Fidesz-KDNP Delegation and EPP Vice-Chairman József Szájer reminded EC Vice-President Frans Timmermans of his duty to respect the sovereignty of Member States. Furthermore, the Fidesz MEPs called attention to the procedure’s lack of a legal basis, adding that there are much more significant issues endangering the existence of the EU.

Kinga Gál, a member of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee pointed out that with respect to the European Parliament’s debate on Poland: “the Treaties do not feature a mechanism on the rule of law, which implies that the whole procedure and the possible punishment for Poland are legally uninterpretable. The resolution of the domestic debate around the Polish Constitutional Court is not within the EU’s jurisdiction”.

The EU suffers through the worst crisis of its 60 years of existence. The British want to leave the EU, and the European Commission is incapable of formulating a feasible and acceptable proposal for managing the migration crisis. Instead of resolving these crises, the Commission aims to initiate a debate on competences that violates the sovereignty of a Member State. This, once again, will lead to an unnecessary conflict that will benefit neither the EU nor Poland.
